My big help out

By sheer coincidence I spent bank holiday Monday volunteering; copywriting hours; for Julia’s House Hospice and when I closed my laptop found out it’s “Big Help Out” day to mark His Majesty The King’s Coronation.

It’s a lovely thing to be able to help someone, especially with something they find really time-consuming or tricky. Like copywriting. I love helping my clients but after Covid it didn’t feel enough. I wanted to volunteer.

It just took a little while to work out how, doing what and for whom.

I’m god-awful at gardening, my baking’s inconsistent, I hate craft and I struggle to stay awake past 10pm, so my babysitting days are over, but copywriting I can do and I figured someone might find it useful.

I’d read about Julia’s House and the amazing work they do supporting families with children with life threatening and life terminating illnesses in Dorset and Wiltshire and thought if I could volunteer some copywriting hours, then it might help alleviate some of the pressure on their already busy marketing department.

Giving them impactful copy to help them spread the word about the care they provide families in the community and in hospice, their fundraising events, the support of their patrons and helping them to recruit more talented nurses and carers.

So, this wet Bank Holiday Monday, whilst my son and his mates flew time and time again down the tubes at Splashdown, I settled myself in at the metropolis that is a Tesco’s Extra cafe (with a very unappetising jacket potato), donned my headphones, tuned into Ludovico Einaudi (good Spotify choice for zoning out) and wrote a few blogs. Happy to do it.

Gutted not to have had the chance to drive a digger like young Prince Louis, but you can’t win everything!

It’s very satisfying though, that warm fuzzy feeling you get from helping someone and seeing their face light up. I’ll never tire of it.

Whatever skill you have or interest you want to pursue. Do it, do it, volunteer today. Help out.

You won’t regret it.

And if you fancy, find out more about the nation’s big help out on 8th May 2023.
